Bogus worker conned pensioner and stole cash

A bogus workman burgled the home of a 66-year-old woman after telling her he would remove grass from around her dustbin.

The man knocked on the door of the woman’s house on Duke Street, Ravensthorpe, at around 11am on Friday, September 11.

He asked if she wanted some grass removing from around the dustbin and then went into the house, claiming to look for bin bags.

He then stole the woman’s purse which contained a small amount of cash.

The suspect is a white male, aged in his late teens to early 20s and of medium build.

He had brown eyes, fair coloured short hair and was wearing a grey coat, white T-shirt and light coloured trousers.

Det Con Shaun Topham, of Kirklees District CID, said: “This incident has occurred in a busy residential area, where there will have been people going about their business, and may not have thought they noticed anything out of the ordinary.

“However, I would ask people who were in the area to think back to if they may have seen the suspect in Duke Street, or the surrounding area to get in touch.

“I would also encourage anyone else who may have been approached by a man matching the description above to come forward. Enquiries are ongoing.”

Anyone with information should contact Kirklees District CID on 101 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
