Crews tackle field fire in Dewsbury

Firefighters carried equipment on foot for almost a mile to tackle a field fire in Dewsbury.

A crew from Dewsbury fire station was called out at around 8.10pm last night (Monday).

The closest they could get to the site with an engine was The Combs in Thornhill so they had to carry equipment along the canal.

Once near the field, they pumped water directly from the canal to stop the blaze spreading.

A second crew was also called out to help.

Watch commander Richard Carr said firefighters spent four hours dealing with the fire.

He said it had been a particularly tough job to face during such hot weather.
