The performance, which will be held next month at The Barbican in London, has sold out but a number of cinemas across the country will have a live satellite feed to the action.

James Dobbin, director of event cinema at Showcase Cinemas, said: “We knew tickets for Hamlet would sell out quickly, and with this National Theatre Live broadcast our customers will get another opportunity to watch the play.

“By broadcasting it live we hope they’ll get the real theatre experience from the comfort of their local cinema.”

Cumberbatch will take the leading role in one of Shakespeare’s most popular tragedies, which centres on Hamlet’s claim to the Danish throne and the plot to avenge his father’s death.

The live screening will take place 7pm on Thursday October 15, with an encore screening on October 22 due to demand.

Go to www.showcasecinemas.co.uk for tickets or visit the cinema’s box office.
