David Peace, who attended Batley Grammar School, is on the 19-strong longlist for the prestigious writing award for his latest work, After the War, Before the War.
Mr Peace, who now lives in Tokyo, won critical acclaim for his 2006 novel The Damned United - based on Brian Clough’s brief and ill-fated tenure as manager of Leeds United.

His other notable works include the Red Riding Quartet, GB84 and Red or Dead, the latter being shortlisted for the Goldsmiths Prize in 2013.

The list will be trimmed down to a shortlist on March 1 before the winner is announced at a gala dinner in London on April 24.

A £30,000 cheque is up for grabs for first prize.
