Developers confirm Mirfield supermarket plans scrapped

The old Veolia site in Station Road, Mirfield, had been subject to plans by developers St James Securities to be redeveloped into a supermarket, which they claimed would be one of the “big four” retailers.

However, after Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Morrisons ruled themselves out of the project last year, Asda today confirmed they would not be taking up the site.

A one-line statement from an Asda spokesman read: “We have no plans for a store in Mirfield.”

This forced St James Securities to concede plans had now been shelved for the site, but the firm promised a new planning application in the near future.

A spokesman said: “We were in discussions with a retailer – however, the world has changed with food retail, and that scheme was no longer viable.

“We are now working on a revised scheme and, subject to a positive outcome with the current occupiers, we hope to come forward with a revised planning application in due course.”

St James Securities would not disclose what the site would be used for.

According to plans released in May 2014, an unnamed supermarket chain wanted to build a 30,000 sq ft store on the old Veolia site off Station Road.

It would include 192 car parking spaces, a petrol station and a pick-up point for online orders.

The store itself would sell food items along with “a small area for clothing and some electrical”.
