Different route for Dewsbury Remembrance Day programme

A bus will be provided to take veterans from Dewsbury Minster to the park instead of the usual destination, Remembrance Gardens, in Longcauseway.

Members of Dewsbury British Legion, who organised the event, have invited the public to walk with the procession to the park.

Secretary Karen Rourke said members felt it was fitting this year - the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of World War One - to lay the poppy wreaths at the town’s original memorial in the park.

She said: “This is probably the most beautiful in the area and it is inscribed with the names of our local fallen heroes.

“Many thanks to Coun Eric Firth for all his help in making this event possible and also the Friends of Crow Nest Park who are paying for the bus for the veterans.”

The Crow Nest Park memorial was unveiled in 1924 and a service of remembrance was held there each year until about 40 years ago.

But a garden of remembrance was created at Longcauseway for the benefit of veterans who, due to increasing age, began to find the walk to Crow Nest Park difficult.

On Sunday November 9 the parade will head to the minster service from the town hall at 10.10am. At 11.45am it will go to the park for the wreath laying ceremony at 12.45pm.
