Educating Yorkshire in awards hat trick

The show’s stars, including headmaster and Reporter Series columnist Jonny Mitchell, teacher Mr Burton and student Musharaf ‘Mushy’ Asghar picked up Best Documentary Series at the ceremony in London.

The programme, which was filmed at Thornhill Community Academy, won a National Television Award in January and a Broadcast Award in February.

During the acceptance speech, maths teacher and deputy headteacher Michael Steer caused a stir when he made a disparaging remark towards Education Secretary Michael Gove.

Mr Mitchell paid tribute to the students at Thornhill Community Academy and teachers around the country.

He told the audience: “When we signed on the dotted line 15 months ago, little did we know we’d be standing on a stage with a National TV Award.

“At a time when teachers are getting bashed left, right and centre, it’s nice we can give a little back to hard working professionals.”

Today, Mr Mitchell apologised for Mr Steer’s comments, calling them a “misjudged attempt at humour”.

He apologised for any hurt or embarrassment caused by the slip up, but restated his support for his deputy, who was widely praised for the dedication he showed to his pupils during Educating Yorkshire.

Mr Mitchell added: “Michael has always acted with great integrity and professionalism, and is an excellent ambassador for the Academy. Indeed, he has received high praise from across the media for the dedication he shows to the students in his care.”
