Last year’s Batley Festival included a mechanical hippo and giant puppet walking the streets, as well as a broad range of stalls and performers.

Volunteer organiser Kimberley Thirkill, said: “Being part of the festival has given me a chance to meet new people and develop new skills.

“It’s amazing to see how the festival has grown in such a short amount of time”.

The festival, which takes place in September, includes music, theatre, art, market stalls and a host of family friendly entertainment, made possible through the contributions of volunteers.

Organisers said they are particularly looking for anyone who can work with schools and young people, and support marketing staff with social media, flyering and website work.

They are also looking for volunteers who can work with artists and steward visitors on the day.

This year’s event will take place on Saturday September 26.

There are plans to expand the festival into the evening although organisers have not revealed the specifics.

The appeal follows National Volunteer Week, June 1-7, which is an annual initiative that celebrates the contribution made by millions of volunteers across the UK, including the hardworking group already working in Batley.

The festival is run with the help of Creative Scene, Art Council England’s project in North Kirklees, which includes The Lawrence Batley Theatre and Kirklees Council.

Its mission statement is to create, be part of and inspire high quality arts experiences.
