Give a needy dog a home

Yorkshire Rose Dog Rescue has said the holiday season was a prime time for dogs to go missing, as revellers tend to leave their doors open when holding Christmas and new-year parties.

Janet Burrell, from Yorkshire Rose Dog Rescue, has said that many dogs went missing over the holiday season and it was vital to report your pet missing as soon as possible.

She said: “There are a lot of dogs that get taken in by kennels over the holiday period, but there are only so many spaces. They do a fantastic job, but they can only keep the dogs for so long before putting them to sleep.

“Any advice I would give to people with missing dogs is that they should visit the rescue kennels as soon as they can – you can ring the dog warden, but you have to see your dog for yourself to know for sure.”

A total of 497 dogs were reported to Kirklees Council as having been lost or missing during 2012, with a further 691 dogs seized during the year.

A council spokeswoman said: “Rescues tend to get full up at this time of year due to people handing their own dogs in and also because some rescues will not re-home dogs during December so they are full up with their own dogs so cannot take dogs from the council kennels.”

The Yorkshire Rose Dog Rescue charity has a number of dogs available for fostering in North Kirklees.

Louis is a one-year-old German shepherd who was picked up from a dog pound – energetic and caring, he is good with other dogs, and is on the lookout for an owner who can keep up! Louis will be neutered and vaccinated upon being rehomed.

Janet paid tribute to the fosterers who help out the charity, citing their invaluable work as key to the charity’s very existence.

She said: “[Louis] would have been put to sleep if we had not brought him out of the pound as he had been in there for seven days, we would not have been able to have saved him had we not have had foster homes for them to go to.
