Investigation underway after fire at Dewsbury rag mill

Fire crews were called to the mill, on Huddersfield Road, at around 8pm yesterday evening to find the two-storey building on fire. Four fire pumps from Dewsbury, Mirfield and Ossett were used and the blaze was brought under control within an hour. Relief crews from Batley and Cleckheaton attended the scene at around midnight to ensure remaining flames were extinguished. No-one was injured during the incident.

It is unclear how the blaze started but it is believed to have caused permanent damage to the property. There will be a safety inspection this morning at 10am.

Richard Carr, Commander of Bluewatch at Dewsbury Fire Station said: “We received a call at 19.59 last night to attened a fire at a two-storey building on Huddersfield Road in Dewsbury.

“Fire crews had to break into the property to tackle the blaze and ladders had to be used to extinguish the fire on the upper floor of the building. We managed to bring the fire under control in around 45 minutes and managed to prevent the flames from spreading to nearby houses.

“I can’t speculate on how the fire occurred - it is possible that we will never know due to the level of damage caused.”
