‘I’ve got a committee driving me’

The man lined up to be the next Mayor of Kirklees has announced which cause he will be supporting during his year in office.

Coun Martyn Bolt, the current deputy mayor, is due to become the first citizen of the borough later this month.

This week he named grant-giving foundation One Community as the charity that will benefit from the Mayor’s Appeal in the next civic year.

Cycling enthusiast Coun Bolt said: “I think many people expected me to come out supporting a cycling project, but needy as many of those are, that would be a personal interest and I want to make sure what we are doing is in a community interest.”

Kirklees Council’s mayor-making ceremony, when Coun Bolt is expected to take over from the current mayor Coun David Ridgway, takes place on Wednesday May 22.

Coun Bolt said: “I’ve got a charity committee driving me and, in keeping with One Community, members of all political parties have agreed to help with the committee. We are planning a number of events.”
