Jubilee legacy hopes for Dewsbury Moor groups given government cash

Two weeks ago, Dewsbury was named as one of 20 towns nationwide being given government cash to make sure no-one misses out on celebrations for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

Now two Dewsbury Moor tenants’ and residents’ associations have won £1,250 each for their community festivities.

Wroe Street TRA member Chris Jenkinson said: “We were planning to have a party anyway, but this funding is a gateway for us to get a gazebo.

“It’s like a jubilee legacy because we’ll be able to buy things that we’ve had to borrow in the past and it gives us the opportunity to put other events on.”

The cash giveaway is part of the Big Jubilee Lunch, a nationwide event by the Eden Project.

For families in Dewsbury Moor, it means a bumper weekend of celebrations.

On Saturday June 2, Schoolcroft TRA will host a party complete with food and drink, a Queen-themed fancy dress competition and a magical ventriloquist at its flat in School Avenue, noon-3pm.

TRA member Julie Cardham said: “We’re over the moon that we can have this summer gala and extend it to a jubilee celebration. It’s good news for the area and we hope everyone will come out whatever the weather.”

And on Monday June 4, Wroe Street car park will be buzzing with families enjoying a DJ, bouncy castle, free food and more, 11.30am-3pm.

Wroe Street TRA has also received £250 from Kirklees Neighbourhood Housing.
