Mirfield Christmas Lights switch-on took place last weekend, with the hit Channel 4 show’s Mr Burton and Mr Steer as special guests.

But the honour of carrying out the switch-on itself fell to Calendar News’s Victoria Whittam, a former Castle Hall Academy pupil.

The Mayor of Mirfield, Coun Vivien Lees-Hamilton, said: “The event was very well-attended, and we also had a bit of luck with the weather this year!

“Victoria said that when she was a kid, she always wanted to press the button to turn on Mirfield Lights, so she got to fulfil that wish!”

Traders who had stalls on the site in the library car park donated £190 to the mayor’s charity, the Safe Anchor Trust.

Educating Yorkshire returns to screens on December 19 with a Christmas special.
