M-way speed fines up 1,000 per cent

The 50mph average speed cameras, put in place during roadworks on the busy motorway, netted 11 times more speeders than the year before.

The West Yorkshire Casualty Reduction Partnership, which manages speed cameras, revealed figures showing 11,180 speeding drivers were caught on camera on the M62 throughout the county.

During 2010 just 1,003 offences were detected. And in 2009, the figure was even lower at 734.

The figures only apply to completed roadwork schemes. These include a new car sharing lane between the M606 and the M62 at Chain Bar, in 2008.

In 2009, new concrete crash barriers were installed between junction 22 near Ripponden, and junction 23 at Outlane, Huddersfield.

Later that year, work began on installing concrete central reservations between Brighouse and Leeds, which continued into 2010. The same project continued from junction 23 and 25 up to last year.

It is thought new technology has improved detection levels.

Martin Howard, spokesman for road safety charity Brake, said: “It is deeply concerning that so many drivers on the M62 are risking lives by breaking the speed limit. Speeding is criminal offence and a major cause of the deaths and serious injuries which take place on UK roads every single day.

“We are calling on all drivers to have a heart behind the wheel and pledge to drive within speed limits at all time, helping to prevent deaths and serious injuries which cause devastation to families and communities.”
