Coun Vivien Lees-Hamilton, who is currently the town’s deputy mayor, was named mayor-designate at a meeting last Tuesday.

Coun Andrew White (Con), who runs Mick’s Fruit and Veg in Huddersfield Road, was voted in as deputy mayor-designate for the 2013/14 civic year.

Both will have to be formally elected by their fellow councillors and sworn in at a meeting in May.

Coun Lees-Hamilton (Con) is also one of Mirfield’s three Kirklees councillors and will be fighting for re-election to that post at the end of her year as mayor.

She has not chosen any charities she will support in office but said: “It’s an honour to be elected mayor-designate and it’s a great opportunity to get out and meet more people.”

The town council holds its next meeting tonight, starting at 7.15pm at the town council offices in Huddersfield Road.

Items on the agenda include the co-option of new members to fill two vacancies.
