Mosque to open its doors for community bonding

A mosque will open its doors and invite residents of all faiths and none to explore its buildings and the beliefs of those who worship there.

The organisers of Madina Masjid in Taylor Street, Batley aim to make local people more familiar and comfortable with Islam, a religion that they feel is associated in the press with a minority radical element.

The event on Sunday, February 7, will feature tours, free refreshments and a chance to observe prayers. It will take place from noon until around 2.45pm.

Representatives from religious groups, police, schools and community groups will be attending.

Chairman of Mount Pleasant Islamic Trust Ismail Mamaniat said: “We at the Madina Majid are delighted at the level of interest in this event.

“We look forward to giving our guests the chance to see for themselves what goes on in the mosque.

“We hope it will help people to associate the mosque not with some kind of threat but with the valuable community work and rich spiritual life which it hosts week in, week out.”

The invitation is part of #VisitMyMosque Day, a national event started in February 2015, where mosques across the UK hold open days, welcome neighbours and share tea and cakes.
