Multimedia mass set to get the Minster rocking

SPOTLIGHTS, smoke generators and electric guitars are not the usual accompaniments to a service of Holy Communion.

But, all these and more will surround the time-honoured taking of the bread and wine when Rock Mass is at Dewsbury Minster next month.

The multimedia Rock Mass has been put together by the Rev Robb Sutherland, a rock-loving, Harley Davidson-riding curate with the Morley Team Ministry, and will take place on Saturday October 15, at 7pm.

The Rev Canon Kevin Partington, from the minster, said: “It’s part of a day-long event at the minster to mark the 400th anniversary of the King James Bible. It’s inspired by a national initiative called Biblefresh, which aims to show how it has stayed relevant over the years and to encourage people to look through fresh eyes at the scriptures.

“The mass will be an ecumenical event which we’re promoting right across the diocese and with churches from other denominations. It’s aimed at young people – and young at heart people of any age.”

Mr Sutherland, who will lead the mass with his rock band Metanoia, said: “It will be quite a high church experience, so there is going to be a full serving team, but as well there is going to be mixed media, different ways of engaging with people – and it will be a bit like a rock concert too, with the band, a grand piano and smoke machines.

The concert will feature a massive lighting rig, three multimedia screens projecting images and a full PA system.
