National award for men’s health prof

Prof Alan White, who lives in Norristhorpe and works at Leeds Metropolitan University, has been given the prestigious Robert Tiffany International Award at the Nursing Standard Nurse Awards 2012.

Last year Prof White, who set up Leeds Metropolitan University’s Centre for Men’s Health, led a team of 36 international academics to produce a report on the state of men’s health in Europe for the European Commission.

The research suggested many men’s premature illnesses and deaths are preventable.

It also warned the state of men’s health in Europe was a serious public health concern.

It suggested that by 2060, there would be 32 million more older men across Europe than now, and 24 million fewer men aged 15 to 64.

The report is said to be influencing governments to explore their male populations’ health.

The prestigious annual ceremony was hosted by broadcaster Angela Rippon and held in London’s Park Lane Hilton Hotel.

Prof White, who is vice-chairman of Mirfield Free Grammar and Sixth Form School’s governning body, said: “I am absolutely delighted to win this award.

“It was fantastic to receive the recognition of being shortlisted, but to win is truly an honour.

“Our research highlighted some serious issues in the state of men’s health throughout Europe.

“Myself and the team are hopeful that our findings will prompt governments of all the countries involved to further investigate the areas of concern.”
