New breastfeeding support group for Dewsbury mums

Trained volunteers will be running the infant feeding classes in a relaxed and informal setting at the Dewsbury Moor and Scout Hill Children’s Centre.

The Bistro, which was set up by social enterprise Locala Community Partnerships, aims to help parents with all aspects of nutrition including breast, bottle and weaning.

The scheme is the 11th to launch in Yorkshire and there are already successful Baby Bistros in Bradford and Calderdale.

The volunteers have all breast-fed their own babies and offer free advice on a range of problems. Mums also have the chance to make friends with other women and help develop their babies’ social skills.

“It’s all about mums giving other mums support because they are the ones who truly understand their problems. To become a peer supporter, the women will have breast-fed their own babies and are able to pass on their experiences to help support new mums in a relaxed social setting,” said volunteer manager Heidi Curry.

The sessions take place on Tuesday mornings from 10am-12pm and are free to attend.

Locala already runs Baby Cafes and health visitor clinics, which provide more specialist support for women with complex feeding issues and are run by experienced health professionals.

“We hope mums in Dewsbury will make use of the new Baby Bistro and will feel free to drop in on the weekly sessions whenever they like,” added Heidi.
