New bus company on road to success

SGI Buses is set to begin a service from Dewsbury to Birstall’s junction 27 shopping complex, the first service of its kind, stopping in Batley, Howden Clough, Birstall and Fieldhead en route.

The firm will also offer lower fares, with free return journeys, while pensioners can ride free all day.

Manager Dale Steel said the company hoped to break Arriva’s monopoly on bus services in the area.

He said: “ We think fares are too expensive and we’re trying to offer cheaper buses.

“We’re a local company – Arriva is owned by a German firm.

“We’re putting competition in the market.”

SGI Buses will operate daily from 7.30am to 5pm.

Adult fares are capped at £2, with children paying no more than £1 for a journey.

The service will also offer ‘hop on’ fares for short journeys, charing 80p for adults and 40p for children.

Buses are also full accessible for disabled passengers.

“We’re just starting with a single service and we’re hoping it’s going to take off,” Mr Steel added.

The venture is parent company Steel Group Investments Limited’s first foray into travel services.

The company, based in Savile Town, Dewsbury, already owns SGI Locum and SGI Care, which provide services for the health sector.

Mr Steel said: “We have got some experienced guys but it’s a completely new venture for us.”

SGI Buses will begin their number 288 return service from Dewsbury to junction 27 next Wednesday.
