No borough-wide 20mph speed limits

Opposition councillors were criticised for calling for a review of 20mph zones and then failing to attend the debate.

Kirklees Cabinet agreed that a borough-wide approach to 20mph speed limit and zones would not work.

Instead they backed a policy for each case being reviewed on its own merits.

Coun Cathy Scott, Kirklees Cabinet member for Place, said: “This is a direct response to a motion at council requesting a feasibility study.

“Cabinet have to take such a decision...none of the groups are here to listen to this report being debated.”

Kirklees Council has been conducting research on speed restrictions since 2012.

In the council report, West Yorkshire Police said that they would “not have sufficient staff to police 20mph speed limits”.
