Foodbank support is wonderful

Now, when we review the old year and start the new, I would like to use the opportunity provided by your letters page to offer a huge and heartfelt thank you to all the individual people, businesses, schools, churches and mosques that have supported, and given so very generously, to Batley Foodbank over the past 12 months.

Without such generosity the foodbank could not have kept going and so many more people in crisis – often families with small children – will have gone hungry and been desperate this last year.

The generosity and obvious compassion of the people around here, not just in Batley, but in the whole area of Spen, never fails to amaze me, and there have been so many individual stories of wonderful and heart lifting acts of generosity - in absolute contrast to the daily stories of desperation from those driven to have to use the food bank.

I must also pay homage to the volunteers who give so willingly of their time, and not just those who work a shift unfailingly week in week out, but also those who turn up when more hands are needed to make the work light.

Because of all this generosity and hard work, this Christmas at the foodbank has been magnificent and so we start the New Year in hope for better times knowing full well we are supported by so many wonderful people.

Thank you.

Ken Lowe
