School of Art to host film

The Kirklees College site has been selected to host Dr Faustus, a new take on the classic tale in which a heartless businessman has the chance to sell his soul to the devil in exchange for power and knowledge, forcing him to grapple with the moral dilemma of choosing right or wrong.

The film is to be directed by Shropshire filmmaker Robin Heap, and involves up to 150 students from across the region in all aspects of its production.

Filming by the British Youth Film Academy (BYFA) will take place over the summer.

The college’s head of creative industries, Karen Matula, said: “We’re really pleased to be hosting the making of BYFA’s latest film this summer.

“It’s an exciting opportunity for our students and a great way of using our cherished Batley School of Art building in Dewsbury. Students all have an opportunity to be involved in the creation of a film everyone can be proud of – the experience is priceless.”

The students will be mentored by professionals from the world of film and education, and offered everything from acting to make-up, wardrobe to camera and post-production through to the red carpet experience.

Director of the Co-operative British Youth Film Academy Kevin Atkinson said: “The film industry is notoriously hard to break into and it is our aim to break down those barriers, making this opportunity accessible to all.”
