Snatched handbag returned to pensioner who was pushed over

A robber pushed an 85-year-old woman to the ground and snatched her handbag.

Police are appealing for information after the offence in Bradford Road, East Bierley, between 12.45pm and 1pm on Saturday, January 9.

A man approached the victim in a driveway, shouted or screamed at her and then pushed her in the chest, causing her to fall over.

He grabbed her handbag and fled on foot.

But the culprit was stopped by another man, who returned the handbag.

The suspect is described as a white man, aged in his late 20s to early 30s, between 5ft 9ins and 5ft 10ins tall, clean shaven, with scarring to the face.

Det Con Andy Clayton, of Kirklees District CID, said: “This was an unprovoked attack on an elderly woman which has understandably left her concerned and shaken.

“Thankfully there was a member of the public in the area who has seen what has happened and been able to recover the handbag.

“We would like to hear from anyone else who has witnessed this offence or seen anyone behaving suspiciously in the area. The man is reported to have shouted or screamed at the victim prior to robbing her and this may have attracted people’s attention.

“Anyone with information is asked to call Kirklees District CID via 101 or independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
