Stray dog numbers also on the rise

CAT CRISIS RSPCA shelters are full with hundreds of cats needing new homes.

The RSPCA says its rescue centres are full, with most unable to take in any more cats.

The RSPCA’s Bradford, Huddersfield and Wakefield branches, which cover North Kirklees, all have more than 80 cats in their care waiting for new homes – costing them £9.40 per cat every day.

The charity says more than 60 per cent of its cat intake is because of cruelty or welfare concerns.

It believes owners are either giving their cats up because of financial problems or failing to neuter their pets.

Animal operations manager Peter Bolton said: “We are dealing with a cat crisis and it is getting worse.

“These problems could be avoided if owners just acted responsibly. The RSPCA like other charities needs help from the public, so please, if anyone is thinking about taking on a cat, come to the RSPCA first.

“We have literally thousands looking for new homes and a second chance.”
