Supermarket interested say developers

Sainsbury’s, Morrisons and Asda have each refused to confirm an interest in plans to build a new supermarket in Mirfield.

But developers St James Securities have insisted talks are ongoing with one of the “big four” supermarkets.

After queries put in by the Mirfield Reporter this week, both Morrisons and Sainsbury’s said they were not interested in building a supermarket at the former Veolia site off Station Road.

Asda sent a statement which read: “We have no comment to make at this time.”

It was confirmed Tesco were not the interested party at a Mirfield Town Council meeting last week.

Oliver Quarmby, MD of St James Securities said: “We are unfortunately not able to confirm the retailer until all the legalities have been signed and sealed.

“I can confirm it is one of the main supermarkets and that, having been in discussions with them for some time, we are now at an advanced stage and should be in a position to name the operator before the planning application is determined.”

The public can view the plans in Trinity Methodist church on Friday June 6, 11.30am-7.30pm
