‘The most 
dangerous right turn in history’

A large-scale housing development will lead to yet more traffic chaos on Mirfield’s roads, the Mayor of the town has said.

Detailed plans for 164 homes and an industrial development on Mirfield Moor were unveiled at a public exhibition this week.

Coun Vivien Lees-Hamilton said the development, accessed via the A62, would mean hundreds more cars on a road which is already “choked to death”.

Driving instructor Coun Lees-Hamilton said she had “real concerns” about access to the site. The plans show an uphill overtaking lane close to Whiteley’s Garden Centre would become a right turn lane into the proposed estate.

She said cars coming out of the site heading for Mirfield would have to go via Stocks Bank Road or Sunnybank Road. “That would make it the most dangerous right turning in history,” she added.

Around 70 people attended the exhibition at Christ the King Church on Monday. Developers Park Crescent Limited had wanted to build a retirement village on the site, but dropped the plans in favour of houses, which will be built by Taylor Wimpey. Plans for eight light industrial units next to site remain the same.

Coun Lees-Hamilton also raised concerns about drainage of the site as some in Sunnybank Road already have underground pumps to deal with flooding.
