Thornhill woman threw knife at paramedic treating her husband

Helen Garner, 50, also threw a butcher’s knife sharpener at an ambulance where her husband was being treated.

Kirklees Magistrates Court heard how paramedics were called to the couple’s home in Edge Avenue, Thornhill, on September 21.

Linda Fowler, prosecuting, said Mr Garner had cut his hand and was bleeding heavily.

When the ambulance crew arrived Helen Garner swore at them and went into her house.

She then went back outside and threw a large kitchen knife at a paramedic who was helping her husband into the ambulance.

The knife missed the paramedic but went through a hedge and hit a first responder car parked on the other side.

Police were called and when they arrived Garner was carrying a butcher’s sharpening steel which she threw at the ambulance.

She was arrested and when interviewed by police admitted she was drunk after drinking a bottle of wine.

Garner said she was suffering from stress from caring for her husband and her children, and that her behaviour was out of character.

Simon Lindley, mitigating, said: “This lady is under no illusions as to the seriousness of the matter and she is deeply remorseful.

“She is someone who cares for many people and had no one caring for her at the time.”

Garner was sentenced to an 18 month supervised community order with a one month alcohol treatment requirement.

Magistrate Cliff Bromley said: “It is quite clear to the bench that you are and independent ant qualified lady who is under a lot of stress.”
