Mirfield, Denby Dale and Kirkburton area committee approved £695.30 for 11 hanging baskets in existing locations, and summer barrier planters and square planters outside shops in Old Bank Road.

The decorations will support the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) and tourism agency Welcome to Yorkshire’s Yorkshire Yellow Initiative.

The permanent displays provided by parks and open spaces at Kirklees Council will also follow a yellow theme in key locations.

Ruth Evans, RHS director of education, funding and communities, said: “The colour is synonymous with the Tour de France, so what better way to celebrate the race coming to the county than by drawing on the beauty of nature and making Yorkshire glow a gorgeous yellow while the world’s spotlight is on it.”

The first two stages – the Grand Depart – take place in Yorkshire on July 5 and 6.
