Update: Driver of truck which smashed into seven cars still in hospital

The dropside heavy goods vehicle first struck two empty parked cars outside Staincliffe Cricket Club at around 2.40pm on Monday.

The truck then careered down Halifax Road towards Batley Carr, crashing into two moving vehicles on its way.

A woman suffered minor injuries.

The out-of-control truck carried on down the wrong side of the road before ramming into three parked cars just after the junction with Healds Road, forcing the truck cab to collapse.

A gas pipe was damaged and a telegraph pole was torn down.

The truck driver, who is believed to have fallen ill behind the wheel, suffered a serious head wound.

The 33-year-old man remains in Leeds General Infirmary after being transferred from Pinderfields Hospital in Wakefield.

The truck belonged to H Rawson Vehicle Dismantlers of Liversedge.

A call to the firm today was answered by the driver’s father.

He did not want to speak at length, but said: “He has been operated on. He seems to be responding at the moment.

“We think he’s on the mend.”
