Amanda Clarke, of Elsham Meadows, Earlsheaton, admitted failing to declare information which resulted in her receiving £52,845.43 in benefits she was not entitled to.

Leeds Crown court heard yesterday (Thursday) that Clarke, 36, was overpaid working tax credit, disability living allowance and incapacity benefit over a six year period.

It followed a joint investigation by HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) and the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).

John Dolan, head of joint strategy for HMRC, said: “Clarke stole from UK taxpayers by concealing information for financial gain. Her motivation was greed.

“HMRC is working hard to stamp out tax credits fraud. It is only right that we investigate claims fully to ensure that our customers receive only what is their rightful entitlement.

“Those who cynically try to defraud and cheat should not be surprised when we investigate them. It is only fair to honest customers and taxpayers that we do.”
