WWI centenary respects to those who served

Whitechapel Primary pupils marked the anniversaries of the Spen men buried at the neighbouring Whitechapel Church in Cleckheaton on October 2.

Pte Sam Butterworth and brothers Ptes Rowland and Frank Hartley – who share the same grave – were killed or died from injuries in September 1916 and 1917. The children had been learning about the graves as part of their humanities curriculum. Spenborough Royal British Legion members turned out with the Branch Standard to discuss the pupils work with them.

Chairman Eddie Morton said: “The pupils of Whitechapel have embraced the centenary of WWI and approached their research with enthusiasm. Their project work has hopefully instilled in them the need for remembrance that will stay with them into adulthood.”

The Rev Brunel James added: “Whitechapel churchyard is a unique and precious local feature. I am delighted that our local school came to learn more about it in this special anniversary year.” The children had been carrying out research about their own relatives who had fought in both the world wars, said teaching assistant Judith Whitehead. The soldiers were also remembered during a morning service on September 28.
