Yorkshire Day celebrations to be held at Dewsbury Minster

An event on Friday, August 2 will rejoice in everything Yorkshire, with stalls and attractions set up to show all that is great about God’s own county.

Tom Hiney, curate at the Minster, said: “We are hoping to have Yorkshire craftsmen and food and drink people operating stalls during the day.

“The refectory cafe at the Minster will have a strong Yorkshire theme for the day and we have got members of the Wakefield Chorus and our own choir singing Yorkshire songs.

“The day will come to a crescendo in the evening with broadcaster and singer Ian Clayton.”

Also on offer will be Yorkshire dialect specialists teaching the history of the county’s tongue, as well as longswordsman dancers and a range of musicians.

Yorkshire Day, which was first celebrated in 1975, falls on August 1, which this year is a Thursday.

However, to allow more people to attend, the Minster has planned their event for Friday, and Tom is excited to be hosting the celebration for the first time.

He said: “It will be the first time we have done a day like this at the Minster.

“It seems a proud time to be Yorkshire with the Olympics and the sense that Yorkshireness is still very much alive.” Anyone who would like to sponsor the event can contact Tom on 01924 450293.
