Your views wanted on Dewsbury’s waterways

The Dewsbury Water Linked campaign is part of a three-year Big Lottery Fund scheme designed to help improve the town’s waterways, and a team of local people will advise on the improvement of local sites such as the Calder and Hebble Navigation and the River Calder running through the town.

The steering group will be made up of between seven and nine local residents and group leaders, and will identify the activities and improvements that locals would like to see, while seeking groups that they can work with to help deliver them.

The campaign’s project officer, Becca Dent, said: “I’m really looking forward to working with the steering group and hearing their ideas of how they would like their waterways to be improved.

“This is a real opportunity for people to take responsibility for their local area and to put plans in place that will make a real difference to the lives of their friends and neighbours.”

Dewsbury Water Linked will also be working with the Outdoor Dewsbury festival this summer, which aims to get people outdoors to enjoy the green spaces in the area.

Miss Dent said: “When speaking to people in Dewsbury, a lot of them didn’t realise that they had so many picturesque spaces that they could use, and we would love to get the community using them again.”

A spokesman for Kirklees Council said: “This is a really positive project for the local community and we are already looking forward to working with British Waterways on the Outdoor Dewsbury Festival, which will run in August and September.”
