Bad day at the office for Trojans and Moor

IT PROVED to be a bitterly disappointing day for Thornhill Trojans in the Pennine League.

The A team forfeited their scheduled game at Queensbury A and the remaining players were used to fulfil the first team fixture.

The away game had been abandoned due to a brawl and there were further flare ups in this clash.

Thornhill’s man-of-the-match was Ben Kendall, while there were also good displays from prop Anthony Harris and youngster Bret Simmonds.

Second row Simon Walker gave Thornhill the lead after 12 minutes, gathering a pass from Andrew Bates, who converted, but Queensbury levelled with a controversial try before half-time when Dave Wilkinson scored despite strong claims of offside in the build-up. Scott Swann converted.

Simmonds broke the deadlock in the second half, receiving the ball 20 meters and charging to the line but Jack Evison chipped over and gathered to score and Swann’s goal gave Queensbury a two-point lead.

There was then a flare up as tempers boiled over before Swann scored the match clinching try when he bounced off a defender to go over out wide and converted.

Another flare up at the end, saw the referee quickly defuse the situation before blowing for full time.

Thornhill face a tasty clash at Hunslet OB this Saturday (2pm)

DEWSBURY Moor’s gallant 14 men put in a brave performance against the Pennine League Premier Division champions but it wasn’t enough to prevent defeat.

Missing key players through injuries and work commitments, Moor were up against it and trailed 20-0 at half-time after a dominant Drighlington performance.

Moor battled bravely after the break and having gone close on numerous occasions, James Delaney finally forced his way over for a deserved try after good work from prop Danny Wardman, which James Eatherley converted.

Matty Shaw showed heart, playing with a chest infection, but Drighlington proved too strong and two converted tries late on sealed a comfortable win for the champions.

Dewsbury Moor entertain Halifax Irish in the Premier League Division on Saturday (2pm), while the Under-18s travel to Wyke in the Yorkshire Youth League on Sunday.

BIRKENSHAW edged out their neighbours in the Bradford Senior Cup last Saturday.

Defences were on top early on and the deadlock wasn’t broken until 30 minutes when ex-Wyke man Shaun Godfrey crossed between the posts to put Birkenshaw 6-0 up.

Wyke hit back when winger Mark Teale stepped inside another former Wyke player, Alan Binns, to score by the posts and Matty Wormald levelled with the goal.

Birkenshaw took the lead when good play by the half-backs saw play move across the line for a converted try.

Wyke continued to press but couldn’t break the defence and although the home side had plenty of possession, it was Birkenshaw who scored another converted try, to put the game out of reach.

Wyke return to Pennine Division Two action on Saturday when they meet Doncaster Toll Bar at Worthing Head Road, while Birkenshaw host Allerton Bywater in Division One.
