Birstall A march on after scores tied

BIRSTALL A progressed to the Wheatley Cup quarter-finals last Sunday thanks to losing fewer wickets after they tied with Methley A.

Alex Drake was in fine form taking 4-18, supported by Ben Twohig (2-26), Nick Kaye (2-39) and Sean Twohig (1-45) as Methley A were restricted to 185-9. Opener Richard Smart (33) led the visitors’ attack while captain Andy Ward added 31.

Openers James Wolfenden (36) and Dominic Cleghorn (22) gave the reply a good start and aided by Ben Twohig (23) Birstall A were well set.

Taj Adil added a fine 42 and helped by 21 wides in 28 extras the home side reached 185-8, winning the tie having lost one fewer wicket.

Adwalton A battled hard but lost by seven wickets at home to Liversedge A.

Tom Marshall (55), Chris O’Reilly (55no) and Christopher Smith (56) led the way as Adwalton A reached 238-8. Brandon Rowlands took 2-51 and Euan Hardcastle 2-52 while there was a wicket each for Adam Clarke, Shafkath Jaza, Bilal Sacha and Kevin Wilbraham.

Liversedge’s reply was built around a stand between Hardcastle (78) and Ben Tillotson (89) while Elliott Hallas added 36 not out as they reached 239-3.

Batley A bowed out after a narrow two-wicket home defeat by New Farnley A. Soyeb Kayat made 33, Roheil Hussain 22 and Saqib Talib 25 as the hosts were 165 all out.

Reece Thompson led the Farnley A reply and they edged their way to 166-8 with 11 balls to spare. Talib claimed 3-26 and Imran Mayat 3-32 while Akhtar Patel took 1-39.

Buttershaw A, Wakefield Thornes A, and Wrenthorpe A also booked their places in the last eight while this Sunday Methley A host Hunslet Nelson A and Moorlands A are home to Hopton Mills A in the remaining Wheatley Cup second round ties.
