Dewsbury boxer Akbar signs-up with Frank Warren

Nicknamed ‘The Prodigy’, Akbar was due to attend a Team GB assessment later in the year, which could have, if successful, put him in good stead for future Olympics.

But the offer came from Queensberry and was hard to turn down for the the Dewsbury prospect.

Akbar said: “This is every young boxer’s dream to be signed with a world renowned boxing promoter.

“These opportunities don’t come round everyday.

“I grew up watching Warren produce world champions and it’s a big honour to be selected to represent his Queensbury Promotions stable.”

Akbar had his sights set on winning the National Elite Championships, which got under way just before the lockdown commenced, as as he was seeded number one in England and he would have entered at the quarter-finals stage.

The former Mirfield Grammer School student added: “I always believed that I had the talent and work ethic to be successful.”

Akbar had a fine amateur record, winning two national titles and reaching a further two national finals, and he was also a six-time Yorkshire champion and Yorkshire youth belt champion, while also representing England three times.

Having already shared the ring with world, British and English champions, Akbar still has much learning to do.

“Boxing is more than just a sport for me,” added Akbar. “I want to represent the local area on the big stage and hope I encourage young kids and people suffering with mental health issues to be inspired by my achievements.”

In his spare time Akbar helps out the Warrior Breed Boxing Gym, passing on his skills and knowledge to the youth.

He also works closely with Bramwell Sports, working with local youths and the Magic Wishing Well Foundation, for which he is an ambassador.

“I want to our local area on the map for all the right reasons,” he added. "I would love to get a big local support behind me.”
