Cory has sights set on National Elite title

O’Regan has already claimed some notable scalps on his way to becoming Yorkshire lightweight (60kg) champion, not least red hot favourite Jack Daniels at the regional semi-final stage.

The quarter-final draw takes place on Friday, following the weigh-ins, when seeded boxers are kept apart from those unseeded.

O’Regan, who is competing in his first Elite championships, is not seeded so could come up against Great Britain boxer Luke McCormack.

Should Cory get through his quarter-final, the semi-finals take place on Saturday, with the final on Sunday.

Former Dewsbury professional Mally McIver is Cory’s coach and believes his charge is capable of causing a few surprises in Liverpool.

Mally said: “Anything we achieve now is a bonus as Cory has done well to get to this stage in his first year at the elite level.

“We will tell Cory to go out and enjoy himself but also give a good account of himself and he is confident of shocking a few.”

Central’s strength and conditioning coach John Tallant has been working on O’Regan’s fitness as the Central team look to bring a first national title to the Batley gym.

There are 13 male and female boxers from Yorkshire who have made it through to the final stages of the England Boxing Elite National Championships.

Central starlet O’Regan will come up against boxers from more established clubs from Leeds, Bradford, Sheffield, Doncaster, Grimsby, Scunthorpe and Hull.

This weekend is the first time in the event’s 128 year history that the men and women’s finals will be held as part of the same tournament and will include Leeds-born Olympic Champion Nicola Adams.
