Gomersal U15s show heart in Blackburn Cup final loss
Gomersal Under-15s gave their all but were ultimately beaten 4-1 by higher ranked league opponents Drighlington in last Thursday's Heavy Woollen District FA Blackburn Cup final.
A healthy crowd were in attendance at Liversedge FC and Gomersal played their part in an enjoyable final but it was Drighlington who prevailed to lift the cup.
Gomersal had reached the showpiece final with victories over Churwell Lions Blue and Black teams and a 7-0 semi-final victory against local rivals Littletown.
Drighlington play in a division higher than Gomersal in the Huddersfield Junior League and were firm favourites having racked up 36 goals in their three ties en-route to the final.
Gomersal battled hard in the first half and were somewhat unfortunate to be trailing 3-0 at the break but played with pride and passion to get themselves back in the game in the second half.
Harrison Shaw gave the underdogs hope when he pulled a goal back and Gomersal went close to adding a second but Drighlington denied them and, with time running out, they bagged a fourth to seal victory.
It was a great game played in a good spirit by two enthusiastic teams who can both be proud of their performance.
