Leeds United boss: Becchio can go if we get a replacement

Leeds United manager Neil Warnock wants a replacement in place before he will agree to letting Luciano Becchio leave the club.

Top scorer Becchio handed in a transfer request last week after the club received several offers for his services and turned them down as they did not meet United’s valuation for the player. He was subsequently left out of the squad to face Tottenham on Sunday.

After the game manager Warnock admitted he still did not know if Becchio would be a Leeds player when the transfer window closes on tomorrow night.

He said: “We have had a few offers from abroad and one or two inquiries from English clubs without an offer.

“I should imagine that in the next few days that there will be a lot, not just at our club, of players looking to see what they can get.

“I’m no different. I’d like to see two or three new faces in before Thursday. It’s scandalous really, the transfer window.

“I saw something where his men put out, a little bit naughty, about how we have not made enough effort, the board. I think that is rubbish.

“He is already our top earner and we have offered him a three-and-a-half year deal on more than that, so let’s put that to bed. We’ve offered him a cracking contract.

“If we don’t sign a replacement then he can’t go anywhere whether he likes it or not. If we do, then he is quite welcome to go because you only want players who want to be there really.

“I don’t think I’ll know until Thursday night.

“The only thing I would say, is that if he goes to Turkey or China, that’ll take more organising time-wise. We will be here all week and we’ll see what develops. I’d still like to get two or three into the squad.”
