Lees give their all in cracking cup tie

braved the freezing temperatures to see if Heavy Woollen League side Lees could make it into the last eight of the national competition.

The first half was far from a classic, with nerves from both sides playing a part, but the Dewsbury side struck first in the 11th minute when Scott Hargreaves chased a through ball and managed to toe poke it past the Fforde Grene goalkeeper before following it up to tap home.

Lees held their slender lead until half-time but Chapeltown came out after the break with renewed vigour.

A break down the right saw Edair Ruiz cut inside a defender and fire home and 10 minutes later another run on the opposite wing led to Fernando Moke putting the Leeds Combination outfit 2-1 up.

Lees pressed for the equaliser and had one effort cleared off the goalline and saw a second also go agonisingly close.

It was end-to-end stuff, with both sides giving their all but it appeared Thornhill’s brave effort would fall just short as Chapeltown hung on.

In the 92nd minute, Lees struck a dramatic equaliser as James Wilson fired a 20-yard shot inside the left hand post to send the tie into extra time.

Chapeltown caught Lees cold from the kick off and another break from out wide led to Dominic Noteman scoring to edge them back in front.

Lees again piled on the pressure and with Chapeltown seemingly out on their feet, Thornhill poured forward with captain Neil Davies and fellow central midfielder Aiden Schofield leading the charge.

There was almost another dramatic equaliser at the end of the second period of extra time when a ball into the area caused confusion.

With a Chapeltown defender on the ground, the ball broke to a Lees attacker but the shot struck a teammate and trickled agonisingly wide as Chapeltown hung on,
