Nostalgia: German musicians visit Cleckheaton

A party of 60 young musicians from West Germany spent some time in the area as guests of Cleckheaton Music Centre in 1984.

The visit was one of a number of exchanges between the Bergkamen Youth Accordion Orchestra and the Music Centre Senior Band.

Bergkamen, a district of Unna, near Dortmund, was twinned with Kirklees.

Their musical director was was Frau Inge Borg who was assisted by her husband Helmut, the director of culture and music in Bergkamen.

The musicians visited York, had fish and chips in Bradford and took part in a joint concert at Batley High School for Boys.

Cleckheaton’s musicians planned to go to Germany the next year.
