Nostalgia: Gomersal gala draws in record crowd

A record crowd swelled Gomersal gala in 1984 as temperatures soared to a sweltering 70 degrees.

Gala committee chairman Stanley Thornton saw his annual event go down as another success when more than 2,000 people attended.

“It was a marvellous day which could not have been better,” he said.

With a bumper crowd, Mr Thornton said he was confident the £300 raised for charity at the previous event had been topped.

Staged in the paddock of Red House Museum, the event coincided with a craft fair organised by the museum’s assistant curator, Stephen Caunce.ao
