The 20-year-old, boxing out of the Bradford Police and Community College, came up against Cleary’s BC man Danny Quartermaine, who was backed by a vociferous home following.

O’Regan produced the more eye catching work against his Leamington Spa opponent but required a split decision to keep hold of the belt he won at the York Hall, Bethnal Green, in December.

Quartermaine had defeated Henri Potter, of Kingfisher Boxing Club, in an English title eliminator on January 16 but was unable to wrestle the strap from O’Regan’s grasp.

O’Regan, who reached the Elite Championship quarter-finalis last year, faces a quick turnaround as a second defence of his English title is scheduled to take place at Durham’s Rainton Meadows Arena on February 20.

O’Regan faces another tough test as he meets 2015 Tri Series champion and British Elite Championship semi-finalists Adam Cope, of Hartlepool.
