Super League and Championship clubs will be counting cost of coronavirus pandemic into 2021 season, says Dewsbury Rams head coach Lee Greenwood

DEWSBURY Rams head coach Lee Greenwood feels that there are big challenges ahead for every rugby league club as the sport braces itself for the full financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

The Rams have not played a game since mid-March and Greenwood believes that a number of clubs will struggle to hold onto their full playing squad going into 2021.

Given the costs involved, Greenwood insists that the Championship campaign would not be able to resume behind closed doors.

He said: “I think it will be a big challenge for clubs to keep their own squads because the money is not going to be around. I would imagine every single club would need to have a cut because they have not had the income they budgeted and planned for.

“Next year’s money will absolutely be down for everybody across the game, there is no getting away from that, that is from top to bottom.

“It is going to be difficult. Whether that means there is more players available because their club can’t afford them or have asked them to take a cut.

“We still don’t know if we are going to play games this year.

From a planning point of view it would be easier to say let’s just start again in 2021 but if we can have games with crowds this year, that is what everyone wants to do.

People don’t want to go 11 months without a game. At our level we can only really play if crowds are allowed.”
