Petanque Pairs at Firth Park

Novice players from the newly-formed Heckmondwike Petanque Club will face some of the county’s top players this Saturday.

The Firth Park-based club is hosting its first regional competition with 16 pairs competing for the Heckmondwike Pairs Trophy.

Despite being only a few months old, the club has grown at an astonishing rate and now has 24 registered members, playing regularly at Firth Park every Wednesday afternoon and Saturday morning.

Saturday’s pairs competition starts at 10am featuring five rounds and spectators are welcome. Tea and coffee will be available. New members are welcome to try the family sport at any of the Wednesday (1pm) or Saturday (10am) sessions. Equipment and coaching is available free of charge.

At the club’s annual meeting last week, the following officers were elected: Chairman, Paul Simpkins; Secretary, Alan Oxley; Treasurer, Alma Johnson; Press officer, Steve Penny; Fundraising, Jane Farrar, Janet Spencer, Amy Best, Carol McCulloch.

Club membership was fixed at £5 per year, £2 for juniors.

Chairman Paul Simpkins paid tribute to the support given by Kirklees Council and said efforts would be made to involve different groups of people in enjoying the sport and the Firth Park facilities.

The club will be take in the Firth Park Open Day on May 26. Other clubs are being formed in Mirfield, Honley and Harrogate.
