Rams leave it late to clinch third victory

All 32 points came in an entertaining second half after the Rams had gone into the break 0-0 for the second time this season.

Dewsbury had produced the better attacking rugby in the first minute and were unfortunate to have a try ruled out when Anthony Thackeray’s long kick hit the base of a post and bounced up for Tom Hemingway to gather and dive over only for the effort to be ruled out.

The Rams defence was again solid, although they had to come from behind before registering a win which maintains their 100 per-cent start to the season.

The deadlock was broken just two minutes into the second half when former Ram Scott Spaven darted over from acting half-back and Stewart Sanderson converted.

Dewsbury hit back almost immediately as Kieran Hyde made a terrific break to set up a good field position before the ball was moved right for Scott Hale to force his way over.

Veteran Super League half-back Paul Cooke forced his way over for an unconverted try to stretch Doncaster’s lead to 10-4.

Just two minutes after conceding a second try, the Rams were level as they drove play close and in-form scrum-half Thackeray nipped over for a try next to the posts and Hemingway converted.

With Hemingway substituted, Hyde hammered over a penalty from 25 yards out to edge the Rams in front for the first time but Sanderson levelled with a penalty against the wind at the other end.

Dewsbury knocked on from a good field position but when Doncaster did likewise from the scrum, it gave the Rams a chance to attack.

They moved play quickly right and winger Greg Scott had the strength to get the ball down under a cluster of bodies.

Hyde curled over a wonderful touchline conversion to stretch the lead to six points and three minutes from time, the substitute hammered over another penalty from 40 yards out to ensure the Rams celebrated an away win with their vociferous travelling supporters.
