Rams show heart in Warrington Challenge Cup defeat

Dewsbury were without 14 regular first team players for the tie but put up a gallant display to keep Warrington at bay for long periods.

Youngsters James Glover and Brad Delaney made their first team debuts at half-back and came up against Declan Patton and Richie Myler in just one example of what Glenn Morrison’s inexperienced side were up against.

Dewsbury fell behind after just five minutes when Myler’s fine break set up a field position which resulted in Brad Dwyer scooting over for an unvonverted try.

Joel Farrell looked to have hit straight back for the Rams as he darted through a gap and over the try line but was held on his back.

From the resullting tackle, Warrington were penalised and Delaney slotted over the goal.

Warrington then hit a pruple patch as they threatened to cut loose, running in four tries in just eight minutes.

Patton kicked left and Gene Ormsby leapt to gather and produced a lovely offload to send Ryan Atkins diving in at the left corner.

From the kick off, Chris Hill broke through and sent Ashton Sims charging to the line and Chris Bridge added his first goal.

A Patton kick forced Dewsbury to drop out and Ben Currie stormed over for Warrington’s fourth try, which Bridge impproved.

Hill again showed his strength as he broke through and sent Patton charging to the posts, with Bridge’s conversion putting the Wolves 26-2 ahead after 21 minutes.

Dwwsbury showed great resolve to stem the flow and deny Warrington further points in the first half.

Loose forward Farrell had a terrific all-round game and his efforts were rewarded when he spotted a gap, skipped through and crahsed over at the side of the posts. Delaney converted.

Full-back Will Forsyth produced a terrific last ditch tackle to deny former Ram Anthony England a certain try and more impressive Rams defence repelled another spell of Warrington pressure before the break.

The Super League big guns began the second half with a three try blitz in the opening 10 minutes.

Winger Kevin Penny squeezed in at the right corner and a lovely handling move soon after gave Penny another chance, which saw him acrobatically dive for the line and superbly plant the ball down.

Bridge converted the second of Penny’s tries and more slick handling sent Bridge over wide on the right to put the Wolves 40-8 ahead.

Myler exchanged passes to scamper away to the line for Warrington’s ninth try, which Bridge converted.

Currie charged over for his second try and Bridge tagged on his sixth goal as the Wire brought up their half-century with 13 minutes to play.

Dewsbury’s defence again did well to prevent further Warrington points and it was the Rams who had the last word when Delaney hammered over a last minute consolation penalty goal.
