Sharks win cup thriller

Shaw Cross Sharks won a thrilling Heavy Woollen Jim Brown Cup semi-final on Tuesday 19-18 after extra-time.

Tries from Danny Smith, Ryan Glynn and Shaun Squires and two conversions from Glynn saw the Sharks establish a comfortable 16-0 interval lead.

Thornhill hit back in the last quarter of the game with tries from Adam Hoyle (two) and Richard Walker plus two conversions from Craig Holmes to make it 16-16 and force extra-time.

In a tense period, the Sharks took the early advantage with a drop goal from Glynn while shortly after Thornhill seemed to have the game wrapped up after full-back Holmes slotted over a penalty for offside.

The drama continued when Cross were awarded a penalty for a high tackle with moments left and Glynn converted to see them snatch victory.

n Next Friday (May 25) sees the return of the senior touch league, for over 33s, sponsored by HB Clark Brewery.

Staincliffe are keen to retain their title. But Butchers Arms, Batley Boys, Dewsbury Celtic, Dewsbury Moor, Drighilington, Shaw Cross, Staincliffe and Thornhill will be challenging.

Matches are each Friday, 6.30pm in Crow Nest Park, with the final on July 13.
